How do Google & Co. actually work?
Most of us use search engines as a matter of course. But behind the fast results lies a fascinating interaction between three main players: the crawler, the index, and the algorithm.
The Crawler: The Diligent Explorer
Imagine the crawler as a small robot that never sleeps. It automatically clicks from link to link through the entire internet, collecting information from every website it finds.
Important to know: If your site doesn’t have good links, the crawler might not find it – and then it won’t appear on Google.
The Index and the Algorithm
After the crawler has collected the data, it is stored in the index (a massive database). When you search for something, a complex mathematical algorithm decides which page best matches your query. The goal is always a perfect user experience: the user should find the best answer immediately.
More than just Google
Google is the market leader in Germany, but did you know that the second-largest search engine is actually YouTube? More and more people search there for video tutorials to solve problems visually. Whether text or video: anyone who wants to succeed online must be visible to these systems.
