Accessible Website: Simpler for Everyone
Barriers on the internet prevent a website from being accessible to everyone. Only through digital accessibility can all people use an online service without restrictions. An accessible website is worthwhile for all companies because: According to the Federal Statistical Office, 7.8 million people with a recognized severe disability live in Germany (as of late 2021). By making your website accessible, you reach more potential customers. Furthermore, accessibility doesn’t just benefit people with disabilities; accessible websites are easier to use, making all users more satisfied.
Important! From mid-2025, websites must be accessible.
On June 28, 2025, the Accessibility Improvement Act (BFSG) comes into force. The law obliges companies to implement accessibility in various areas, such as e-commerce or telecommunications services. This means that websites and web shops must also be designed to be accessible. Companies that violate the BFSG must expect penalties. There is still enough time to convert your own website to be accessible in light of the legal requirements.
When is a website accessible?
Specific barriers include, for example:
- People with visual impairments may have difficulty recognizing text or form fields if they have low contrast with the background.
- Deaf and hard-of-hearing people cannot use videos if they do not contain subtitles.
- Blind people cannot use websites properly if images, forms, and buttons are not described in text.
What does an accessible website cost?
- How accessible is the website already?
- How extensive is the website?
- How old is the website?
